Since you are looking at a second hand water, have a inspection done. You don't need any surprises with the pump or the x,y or z axis.

Pump: Is it a direct drive or a intensifier, both have its advantages and disadvantages. Both can be expensive to repair if the maintenance was not kept up  i.e. Oil changes or did they run until the pump failed before they did a rebuild.

Axis: Have a ball bar done, this is checking for the backlash in the ball screw or gears, too much will normally require the ball screw, nut or gear to be replaced.  Have they lubricated the machine properly.

Outward appearance: All waterjet will due to the nature of its' operation be dirty, no way around it but that should not mean that the bellow and protective coverings should not be in place. The covers are there to keep excessive dirty and abrasive from working it way into the bearings and the drive components.

More then anything you won't to know it works, I go to enough customers that buy site unseen and go off of the sellers word that the machine works great and all pieces are with the machine.

I know it is a extra added expense, 1500.00 inspection may save you 15000 or having a 8500lbs paper weight.
