We have been using various methods of supporting materials for years now. I HIGHLY recommend using "Rhinoboard" or any similar products you may find. It is a bonded polymer matrix, unlike typical waterjet bricks which are screwed together and fall to pieces almost immediately.

Check them out and see if they will work for you. They have worked well for us in many applications. The only thing I don't recommend cutting on Rhinoboard is soft parts such as rubber, because the edges will actually flex down into the matrix and leave a slightly wavy edge when complete. It is hardly noticeable but it has caused problems on tight tolerance parts for us.

I have used waterjet bricks in the past with some success but did not like the out of flat condition it typically had creating stand off problems. We have steered away from it all together over the years and now use either blue foam board for abrasive cutting that requires no back blasting to occur on the parts or aluminum honeycomb for water only applications. Other than that its just the usual blade style set up.
