we currently use stainless steel but we cut many of the same small parts and i was wondering if anyone has used aluminum for their slats with success? i cant have rust so plain steel is out of the question. any help is awesome.

Sounds pretty expensive either way Nathan, the stainless will likely last longer however and you can minimize expense by using as few as needed. Have you tried waterjet bricks made from plastic? There are several options out there but the price may be near the same depending on consumption.

We use a zinc coated steel. We cut the slats out of sheetmetal.
This will rust, bu we prevent rust by placing a layer of softboard wood on top of it.
Dont use hardwood board for it, because it will not dissolve in water and clogs your pump.
I want to experiment with sheets of paper or cartboard, or maybe the honeycone plastic sheets that is the wrapping of our aluminium/steel/stainless sheets.
Advantage of the last one is that its free (waste), and it floats (so less stuff in the pool)
Stainless is too expensive, and aluminium is way too soft.
